Worming the way to finished compost
Article Abstract:
Ecology Farms, California, initially sold Eisenia Fetida worms for composting, but has moved into vermicomposting using yard trimmings. Windrowed materials have to be wet to promote high activity levels among worms, and this means that the finished compost has to be dried off. The piles are sprayed with water after they have been ground, and they are then ground again to provide fine materials for worm food. The worms used are not common earthworms, and stay near the surface where they breed.

Organic farms and urban yard trimmings
Article Abstract:
Organic farmers will find several advantages to producing their own compost. Large compost producers have difficulty manufacturing compost that suits the specialized needs of organic farmers, and such farmers will find it more satisfying to completely control the composting process themselves. The story of one organic farmer, Phil Foster, is presented. Foster, who lives near Hollister, CA, studied composting procedures and adapted them to his organic farming operation.

Fine-tuning the soil food web
Article Abstract:
Crop nutrition consultant Jim Barlow and scientist Elaine Ingham formed a business partnership called Soil Foodweb Inc (SFI) in 1996. The company, which analyzes soil samples, was fortunate to have the people who have been using the services of the Soil Microbial Biomass Service (SMBS) at Oregon State University as its clients. SFI also uses a database of 25,000 soil samples that have been analyzed by SMBS.
