Serious symmetry
Article Abstract:
Modernism launched in the UK in the 20s and 30s opposed the decorative use of doors in architecture. Before the 20th century doors were used to enhance the architecture of a building and in buildings, such as public houses motifs and sculptures were used to advertise the purpose of the building. Symmetry was also important reiterated in gates, drives, avenues, arcades, colonnades and statues. The Modern Movement moved away from the social symbolism of the door making them no higher than 2 metres and inconspicuous.
