No help in the wings: competition from Fortune 1000 media companies not among NAHP's top concerns

The National Assn. of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) does not seem to be very concerned by the entry of mainstream media groups into the Spanish-language media arena. The NAHP's ambivalence has earned it the ire of small publishers who say that the trade group has ignored their pleas for assistance.

The growing market for Hispanic publications have prompted Fortune 1000 companies to introduce their own Spanish-language publications. The competition has forced small Spanish-language newspapers to close down and yield to the larger companies.

Both Arizona and New Mexico are taking advantage of NAFTA benefits in their trade with Mexico. New Mexico posted 33% growth in exports to Mexico from 1993-1994 while Arizona's exports to Mexico increased by 26% in 1994 over the previous year.
