Our white whale, Elvis; or democracy sighted
Article Abstract:
America's continuing fascination with the Elvis Presley mystique reveals much about the complex cultural realities of popular culture in the US. In many ways, the latter-day elevation of Elvis to the level of cultural icon makes the man, the myth around him and his music a valuable reference point in the analysis of American cultural epistemology. Among the many features of the Elvis phenomenon, none perhaps is as striking as the fact that Elvis was one of the first mainstream acts to meld country music with black music at a time when the US was dealing with the need to desegregate its society.
