An African American father describes the first time that his young son became the target of racism. The experience reminded him of being made to feel different during his own childhood. He explained to his son that what is inside a person is more important than skin color.

Children become aware of skin color differences at about age 3 and begin to talk about the differences at about age 4. They easily learn value judgments about skin color from many sources including television, relatives and other children.
