The relationship between communication skill and marital satisfaction: some moderating effects
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated the hypothesis that the relationship between communication skills and satisfaction with a marriage is not as straightforward as some researchers have suggested, but includes a number of moderating variables. Sixty couples completed tasks to indicate their communication skills and marital satisfaction. The results showed the significance of moderating variables, including marital distress status, the source of the analysis and the communication skill type, in varying the strength and direction of associations.

Reply to 'From basic research to interventions'
Article Abstract:
Specific criticisms made by Stanley and colleagues concerning results of a study by Gottman, Coan, Carrere and Swanson on marriage, are addressed. It is concluded that basic research can have a profound effect on clinical practice, adding precision to conceptualization and measurement. It can also suggest new interventions, which of course, should be subject to empirical tests and realistic clinical trials.
