Round-up
Article Abstract:
Prospects for the UK machine tool industry remain bright despite the 96 million pounds sterling trade deficit in 1996. Metalworking machine exports grew by 23.8% in 1996 to reach 546 million pounds sterling while computer numerical control machine tool exports rose by 36.6% to 312.9 million pounds sterling. The deficit is attributed to the large number of specialized equipment for the semiconductor industry imported from the US. Pending orders and increased demand will also fuel growth in 1997.
