Archaeologists uncover wine cellar from early colonial America: Excavations of Jamestown turn up wine bottles from the 1600s
Article Abstract:
Archaeologists uncovered a brick-lined cellar containing intact wine bottles from Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in America. Senior curator for the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Bly Straube, noted that many of the roughly 500,000 artifacts discovered by the team dates back to the early 1600s and that glass bottles were not made in England until 1650.
