Budgens quits discount market
Article Abstract:
Budgens is a UK supermarket concern which has sold 5 of its Penny Market discount stores, acquired by Lidl, a German discount store concern. The UK market for discount stores has been affected by price competition from traditional supermarkets. Aldi and Netto plan to boost the number of their outlets in the UK, but smaller discount store chains have more difficulty competing in the UK market. Lidl is opening one retail outlet per week for the UK market.

How is Wal-Mart doing in Germany?
Article Abstract:
As US retailer Wal-Mart pursues its expansion in Europe with the acquisition of UK major multiple Asda (see Eurofood, 17 June 1999, p9), analysts are assessing the impact of the group in Germany, where it has been present for a couple of years. Its campaign there really took off with last December's purchase of 74 Interspar stores (see Eurofood, 17 December 1999, p11), and it now operates 95 hypermarkets in Germany.
