Buying Merlot: choose 1995 California Merlot carefully - some are tough to swallow

California's 1995 vintage of Merlot wines are generally loaded with too much tannin. There are a few recommended California Merlots such as Beringer Howell Mountain Bancroft Ranch and Duckhorn Napa Valley Estate Grown that are superior wines. Some of the tannic wines may benefit from ageing.

Lots of Merlot, but slim pickings

Merlot vintages from 1991-1994 are rated on a scale of one to 100, with tasting notes provided. Some of these wines are good, but few can be described as excellent. An exception is a 1992 Beringer Howell Mountain Bancroft Ranch at $29, rated 92.
