Dairy foods shape up for the future
Article Abstract:
Consumers are looking for a far healthier lifestyle as we approach the new century, and as a result dairy food formulations have had to change. Ingredients suppliers in particular are having to respond to the consumer demand for healthy products. This has been achieved by introducing natural raw materials which contain a lot less fat, salt and artificial colours or flavours. The matter of cost too is having to be considered by ingredients manufacturers; if fats are to be reduced then cost must be controlled too in order to maximise profits. This is not an easy thing to establish as many standard dairy products are particularly susceptible to changes in the commodity markets. As a result of a reduction in fats it seems almost certain that the value of the protein fraction of milk will rise while butterfat declines. If the market is to continue to be competitive then it is vital that it stay ahead of all the changes occurring in R&D as well as consumer trends. As attitudes change his could become more difficult.

Potato merger
Article Abstract:
There is speculation within the potato industry that there is to be a merger between Greenvale Produce and Anglian Produce. The two companies together handle more than 800,000 tonnes of potatoes annually. If a merger were to go ahead the two would bring their individual expertise to the potato industry. Anglian Produce for example is an expert in potato growing, while Greenvale is an expert in seed production and pre-packing for major retailers. Customers would benefit from the merger by having an enhanced procurement base for their requirements. Growers would gain access to a much wider market. *
