Dairy market to rise in value

Article Abstract:

The consumption of dairy desserts, yogurts and ice cream in the European Union (EU) countries is expected to rise by 3.4% by the year 2001. The value of the market for dairy products in the EU during 1996 was worth $136.6 billion and is predicted to be around $144.8 billion by the year 2001 despite a fall in overall consumption. Dairy products account for some 13.6% of all food and drink eaten during 1996. The market of margarines is decreasing whilst the consumption of liquid milk has stabilized. The EU makes 44% of cheese and 25% of the butter sold on the global market.

UK households eat more fruit

Article Abstract:

UK average household fruit consumption increased from 702 units in the first quarter of 1997 to 718 units during the first quarter of 1998, an increase of 4%. Milk and cream consumption rose from 2081 units in the first quarter of 1997 to 2095 units in the first quarter of 1998. Average food expenditure per person per week fell from 14.59 pounds sterling in the first quarter of 1997 to 14.49 pounds sterling in the first quarter of 1998. Consumption of beef remain stable from 1997 to 1998.
