Spanish oil consumption rise not enough to offset price cuts
Article Abstract:
Total household consumption of edible oils in Spain rose by 6% in 1997 from 1996 to 668 million lt. However, significant price cuts for most types of oil led to a 20% fall in value sales from 1996's Pta243 billion. The share of olive oil in household consumption rose by 12% in volume terms in 1997, and olive oil now represents 52.5% of all oil sold in Spain. Sunflower oil's share of volume sales declined to 32% in 1997. Retail sales of edible oils declined by 19% in 1997 from 1996 to Pta153.4 billion.
