Chilled soup sales set to rise in shrinking European market
Article Abstract:
European sales of soup and bouillon will grow 4% to 5.7 billion litres by the year 2000, with the UK expected to be the highest growth market with sales growing 11% by volume to 1.8 billion litres from 1.06 billion litres in 1995, say analysts ERC Statistics International. Chilled soup sales will grow by about 100% to 53.6 million litres by the year 2000 from 26.6 million litres in 1995, with the UK, France and Belgium remaining the main markets. The market for chilled soups will grow 18.1% by real value to ECU606.2 million. The Italian soup market will grow 10.2% by real value to ECU199.6 million by 2000.

Innovation drives UK soup sales

Soup has remained popular in the UK due to the development of new proudcts according to a report by Datamonitor, and volume sales have increased. Most growth is in premium brands and innovations in packaging, such as cream soups in the chiller cabinet and frozen soups packed in microwaveable bowls, are expected to increase sales further. Chilled soups are a fast growing sector, with New Covent Garden Soup Co leading the market.
