Supermarket takeovers set to increase over next five years
Article Abstract:
A report from Paribas Capital Markets shows that the UK food retail market is the most effecient in Europe, dominated by chains such as Sainsbury and Tesco. However stringent planning guidelines and the continued developed of discount stores has meant limited opportunity for expansion and improved profitability. The report predicts that overseas acquisitions and partnerships will increase during the next five years, with France the most important market. Casino of France, which has underperformed the French market, and Docks de France are the mostly likely to be targeted.

French want more services from supermarkets
Article Abstract:
Reports by Satisteme and ESSEC both show that French food shoppers are more concerned about improved services than prices. The reports call for food retailers to follow the examples of UK chains including Sainsbury and Tesco. Food retailers will attract more customers in the future if they provide services such as creche facilities, bag-packing and loyalty cards. The reports show that some shoppers would willingly pay for some services such as home delivery, telephone shopping and crech facilities.
