UK supermarkets most expensive

UK consumers pay more for common food items than their counterparts in other part of Europe and in the US, according to a survey by UK newspaper 'The Sunday Times.' The survey revealed that a selection of groceries which cost 82.05 pounds sterling in UK supermarket J. Sainsbury PLC would be 27% less in France, 31% less in the US, and 35% less in Germany. Dutch customers would pay the equivalent of only 49.95 pounds sterling for a similar selection of goods. UK supermarkets charge considerably more for luxury goods in particular.

Swedish retailers to increase number of foreign suppliers, says new report

Food retailers in Sweden are planning to boost the number of foreign suppliers in the future, according to a survey by the University of Lund, southern Sweden. However, in the long term the number of foreign suppliers will actually fall. The short-term increase is expected to be driven by own-label products, which currently account for 8% of total sales at ICA. The survey investigates the effects of competition and cooperation in the EU, on the food retail sector in Sweden.

Supermarkets increasing share of Swedish food market
Article Abstract:
Supermarkets and hypermarkets dominate the Swedish food retailing market and traditional retailers are losing market share, according to a report commissioned by the German Agricultural Produce Marketing Association. Cash and carry warehouses are only used by a few consumers, but self service stores, convenience stores and kiosks have become more important over recent years. Swedish consumers consider freshness, service and environmental aspects to be important.
