Families launch new Napa Valley winemaking venture

Lang & Reed Wine Co, White Cottage Ranch and Snowden Vineyards are new, family owned, enterprises in the Napa Valley. Snowden uses home grown grapes for its Cabernet, White Cottage makes red wines including Zinfandel and Sangiovese blends while Lang & Reed focuses on Cabernet Franc production.

The Villa Mt. Eden Santa Barbara County Signature Series 1993 is the best among a total of over 500 wines presented. Several 1993 vintage wines are also excellent buys, with over three dozen Chardonnays being given outstanding and another 159 scoring a minimum of 85 points.

Wine treasures in unlikely cellars

A wine collector was surprised to find several bottles of 1971 Barolo Brunate from Marcarini, Italy, for $3.99 a bottle at an unlikely place, a Liquor Barn store in Vallejo, CA. A few years later he found mismarked 1985 Chateau Margaux at $6.50 a bottle.
