Hazlewood Foods hit by exceptional costs, removes GM ingredients
Article Abstract:
UK manufacturer Hazlewood Foods has announced that it hopes to remove genetically modified ingredients from its products within the financial year in progress in response to pressure from consumers. The group has just reported flat pre-tax profits before exceptionals at 40m [pounds sterling] (??61.43m) for the year ended 31 March. However, exceptional losses related to restructuring and the closure of non-core businesses pushed profits down 39% to 19.7m [pounds sterling]. Operating profits at the group's convenience operations fell 18%, and chief executive John Simons said that "It was a tough year for us, but we've done a lot of repositioning in the year which is good for long-term growth."

Industry to pay for UK Food Standards Agency
Article Abstract:
The UK government has formalized its plans to introduce a Foods Standards Agency to improve the quality and safety of food, in the UK. The Agency will examine foods for their nutritional content and it will advise the government on policies relating to food matters. The Agency is estimated to need more than 100 million pounds sterling, annually, for running costs. It has been proposed all food outlets would require a licence costing 100 pounds sterling, each year, in order to fund the new Agency. It is predicted some 60 million pounds sterling could be raised by such a scheme.
