The US imported 71,000 cases of vintage Port wine from Oporto, Portugal in 1996, up from 26,000 cases in 1995. The increased demand from the US raised prices in the UK, resulting in a decline in local consumption from 40,000 cases in 1995 to only about half of 1996 US consumption in 1996.
