Wine collectors go through typical phases, starting with buying inexpensive wines and graduating to better ones. The typical US collector will start with Cabernet and move to Bordeaux and onto Pinot Noir and other wines. Collecting then becomes a passion and finally the collector fixes on a few specific favorites.

Many new wine collectors begin by amassing California Cabernets. These wines are very good, prices are reasonable, they age well and are readily available. The excellent vintages of the 1980s are recommended.
