Journey to excellence: how Sandra and Bill MacIver of Sonoma's Matanzas Creek Winery survived a long road strewn with emotional, financial and viticultural potholes

Article Abstract:

The Matanzas Creek Winery which produces fine Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines, was started from scratch by the MacIvers in 1972. In 1995 they had almost $6 mil in sales. It took over 20 years before they reached this success. Highlights in the winery's development are recounted.

Well-tempered Steele: winemaker Jed Steele survived a pitched battle with a major winery to become a respected vintner in his own right

Steele, a winemaker who got his master's degree in enology in 1975, was instrumental in making Kendall-Jackson a success. Steele now has his own winery in Lake County, CA, and is producing top-scoring wines. His legal troubles with Kendall-Jackson and other topics are discussed.

Napa vintner spends $20 million on lavish underground winery

Article Abstract:

William and Leticia Jarvis' Jarvis Winery on Monticello Road in Napa Valley, CA, was built at the cost of over $20 million. The virtually underground winery has just released 1992 vintages of its Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Cabernet Francs.
