Overseas operations boost Carrefour sales

French retailer Carrefour is continuing to expand its overseas operations. In 1996, it had 159 stores outside France, compared with 117 within France, and aims for new store openings in three new countries each year. In 1997, it will focus on Latin America, Asia and Europe. New stores are set to open in Poland and Singapore, with outlets planned in Colombia and Jakarta, Indonesia, for late 1997 or early 1998. Its non-French sales rose by 2.8% in 1996 from 1995 to 92.1 billion French francs.

Carrefour steps up pace of Asian expansion programme
Article Abstract:
Carrefour of France, a retailer, has been targeting Latin America where most of its overseas outlets are, and is keen to seek expansion in Asia. It has already opened outlets in Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Thailand, with further outlets planned for Hong Kong and South Korea. The company has opened about two outlets a year between 1990-1995, but is aiming to open about 10-12 outlets each year.
