Wating for Merlot
Article Abstract:
1996 is not an outstanding vintage for California Merlots, with only 7% of the upper tier wines tasted earning outstanding scores. 1997 Merlots fared slightly better. A guide to the best of both vintages is presented, and a rating of California Merlot vintages from 1980 to 1997 is included. 1987 and 1994 were rated highest.

Grassy knolls with Screaming Eagles
Article Abstract:
Some Wine Spectator readers seem to think that wine publications favor certain wineries over others or give too much attention to small wineries. Another complaint is that publishers ignore lesser-known wine regions. Wine writers try to be honest and fair.
