Swedish food retailers unfazed by lower tax in Norway
Article Abstract:
Tax cuts pose a potential threat to Swedish food retailers along the Norwegian border who benefit from cross-border trade due to high food prices in Norway, but few express serious concern. The competition between the nations grew partly out of Sweden's decision to join the European Union. Norway has a 23 percent tax on food, compared to a 12 percent tax in Sweden, cut from 21 percent a few years ago. Dropping Norwegian food prices to Swedish levels would nevertheless require not merely a tax cut but a revamping of agricultural policy because meat is 40 percent more expensive in Norway than Sweden.
