UK to label all GM foods

Article Abstract:

The UK National Farmers Union are supporting plans to label genetically modified (GM) foods, in order to allow consumers a choice of product. Representatives of the Transport and General Workers Union are calling for a public register of GM foods, to allow public access to further information. The Union is also calling for the planned Food Standards Agency to be separate from both the food industry and the government. Food producers have promised to label products containing GM maize and soya from Jan 1998. It is predicted about 15% of all US maize and soya will be GM.

Quality is top priority for future success

Article Abstract:

The European food industry is concentrating on providing top quality services, products and packaging in an effort to improve consumer demand during 1996 and beyond. Industry experts expect prices to be reduced as a reaction to poor market conditions, although increased sales are expected to counteract lower profit margins. Effective advertising campaigns and growth in the export market are both seen as essential to the future success of the industry.
