US fast food chains dominate in western Euorope
Article Abstract:
McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC now operate nearly 4,000 outlets thoughout Europe and their dominant position has been helped by the rapid growth in units and major investment, according to the European Horeca Index 1995 by Datamonitor. McDonalds is the most significant chain with 1,813 outlets, followed by Pizza Hut with about 770 restaurants. Burger King of the UK has increased its Euoropean presence, and other challenges to the US dominance include the Quick and Freetime chains owned by Carrefour, and the Happy Eater and Little Chef roadside restaurants owned by Forte in the UK.

Burghy continues to hold its own against McDonalds
Article Abstract:
Burghy of Italy, a fast food operator, has reported 1994 sales of 176 billion Lira, and predicts further rises in 1995. However McDonalds of the US is aiming to takeover the top spot by launching several new products specifically designed for the Italian market. Burghy has 76 outlets in Italy and plans a further 16 in 1995. McDonalds currently has 27 outlets and plans to move the franchising, with 12 new restaurants planned for 1995.

Wendy's and Hortons merge
Article Abstract:
Wendy's of the US, a hamburger group, is to merge with Tim Hortons of Canada, a major coffee and doughnut chain. The companies have already opened joint hamburger and doughnut outlets and the merger will improve their market share in both North American and overaseas. Wendy's has 4,500 outlets in 34 countries, and Tim Hortons has about 1,000 outlets.
