Yoghurt firms beat gloom

Yoghurt producers in Germany increased turnover by 6.5% in 1994, with sales up by 4.9%. However sales rose by just 1.5% in 1st qtr 1995, with turnover down by 0.8% due to price pressures forcing companies to offer more products at promotional prices. Ehrmann is the market leader, with sales of its Almighurt brand increasing 20%, and Bauer, the second largest yoghurt maker, is developing yoghurts for discount stores' own labels, following the success for discount stores.

New markets and products drive European yoghurt growth
Article Abstract:
The European yoghurt market will see growth rising to about 5% a year in the latter half of the decade, according to predictions from Frost & Sullivan. The growth will come from new product launches and from the opening up of new markets by the dominant groups, such as Danone, Nestel, Yoplait, Muller and Sudmilch. The fastest growing north European yoghurt market is the UK with low fat products the most popular.

Nestle of Switzerland believes it will revolutionise the German yoghurt market with its new yoghurt aimed at promoting good health. The LC 1 product uses the company's owns patented strain of bacteria, which is of benfit to the body's natural immune system.
