Coyote as cheat in Comanche folktales
Article Abstract:
Comanche folktales depict the trickster figure Coyote as a character who must by nature act deviously rather than directly. Knowledge of Coyote's nature thus gives his adversaries a false sense of confidence as they know he is unable to attack them directly and they believe that they can guard against trickery. However, Coyote is always able to perform some 'out-of-sight' deception, even in one fairly recent story managing to defeat a white man looking him straight in the eye. Coyote's success in this case points to the Comanche's ability to cope with the threat to their traditional way of life.
