Genetics of atherosclerosis risk factors in Mexican Americans
Article Abstract:
Genes contribute to the high risk of heart disease in Mexican Americans. A study of 1,400 people from 42 extended Mexican-American families localized some genetic evidence for disease risk. Researchers determined the chromosomal locations for risk factor genes linked to atherosclerosis, obesity, and diabetes. There were genetic effects on leptin and HDL-C levels. Largely unknown new genes were identified for 13 major disease traits.

Cholesterol-dependent regulation of nitric oxide production: potential role in atherosclerosis
Article Abstract:
Atherosclerosis has been shown to be preceded by low levels of vascular nitric oxide. Cholesterol-induced caveolin reduces nitric oxide levels through stimulating production of inhibitory caveolin endothelial nitric oxide synthase complexes.
