The culture of female circumcision
Article Abstract:
Nurses will be better able to deal with issues of female circumcision if they understand its traditional underpinnings. Although not prescribed by any religion, female circumcision exists in many African cultures. The type of procedure varies, but it is intended to dampen sexual desire, prevent promiscuity, and ensure marital fidelity. The affected women strongly support it. The procedure cannot be condoned, but nurses can better educate and advocate if they do not respond with shock or outrage.
