X-rays help measure lumber strength on-line
Article Abstract:
Members of the lumber industry are using an innovative X-ray technique to examine the density machine stress rated (MSR) lumber on-line, saving valuable production time. The production of MSR lumber requires stringent evaluative measures in order to ensure the integrity of each board, but conventional mechanical methods of scrutinizing MSR lumber can cause weaker logs to jam while in production. But systems that emit X-rays into lumber and measure resultant attenuation rates can significantly reduce the amount of energy expended on quality control.

Lumber-import pact not too disruptive
Article Abstract:
The U.S.' Apr 1, 1996 implementation of quotas on duty-free imports on Canadian lumber has had the desired effect of raising prices by 30% to 40%. The agreement calls for Canadian lumber producers to pay tariffs on each board foot they export to the U.S. beyond their quota allotment, with the Canadian federal government collecting the fees and redistributing through each province's government. Canadian lumber producers suggest that higher home building costs and a diminishing U.S. supply of lumber have also caused their prices to increase.
