A Practical Perspective - Case Mix Management: Issues and Stategies
Article Abstract:
Revamped hospital factors such as cost projects, doctors' duties and technology issued are examined. The effect of these elements on the health care industry and major hospital management strategies impacts powerfully on the areas of departmental reorganization, refined information feedback and revised financing polices. Since Medicare has set the trend toward a repayment system which compensates cost effectiveness, physicians' control of hospital services will be uppermost in the realm of medical record-keeping and drug choices. Heretofore, health care administrators were not motivated to make price-competitive decisions about technological equipment; now new products will have to be both clinically effectual and cost-saving. Decision-making assessments are essential in nursing arrangements, leasing or buying materials, contracting, ancillary staffing and other programs planned for providing optimal quality care. The manner in which a hospital deals with developing new demands, and the competence it exhibits during this state of flux, will be a determinant in its viability.

Collective Bargaining among Nurses: Current Issues and Future Prospects
Article Abstract:
With amendments in 1974 to the Taft Hartley Act, voluntary, nonprofit hospitals began collective bargaining with their employees. Within three years, collective bargaining contracts between hospitals and their nursing staffs increased by twenty-five percent. Currently the American Nurses Association (ANA) is competing with unions to act as the bargaining agent for nurses. Compensation appears to be a major factor in unionization. Changes in the nursing population also lead to job dissatisfaction. Nurses are coming from better socioeconomic groups and their formal education is better. Therefore, they are expecting more autonomy, authority in policy making and advancement. Cost containment systems may influence future collective bargaining.
