Antibiotic classification: implications for drug selection
Article Abstract:
An overview of different families of antibiotics used routinely in critical care is presented. These drugs have been classified according to where they act at the cellular level, including those that interrupt reproduction, break down cell walls, and prevent protein production. Suggested uses for each drug family, how they are administered and dispersed in the body, and distinguishing characteristics are also highlighted.
