Determinants and costs of Medicare post-acute care provided by SNFs and HHAs

Article Abstract:

A survey on the use of skilled nursing facilities (SNF) and home health agencies (HHA) by Medicare and Medicaid eligible individuals showed that the use of these SNFs and HHAs are within their intended use, with a significant number of the functionally disabled and those with little access to informal care using the facilities. The utilizers of these facilities also showed an interesting behavior of using either the Medicaid or Medicare spending for their stay in such facilities. Many individuals in need of long term institutional care opted for SNFs rather than HHAs, emphasizing the differentiation in services.

A number of health plans have developed their own disease management initiatives in an effort to create effective strategies for treating specific diseases. Through these programs, health practitioners have not only improved the outcome of medical consultations, but actually reduce health expenses within a limited time frame, as well.

Reinventing health services research

Article Abstract:

The rising demand for health services research has challenged the fundamental role of the federal role government in health care. The competition in the health care market as a result of the rapidly rising number of consumers and private purchasers is pressuring the government to create financing strategies dedicated to the improvement of health services research. The government is also being prodded to make choices about health plans based on measurement performance rather than performance costs.
