Financing Long-Term Care: The Investor's Perspective
Article Abstract:
Schopp identifies who typically buys tax-exempt health care bonds. He also identifies the bond rating agencies and the rating process. Avenues of informing potential buyers of a bond issue are outlined. Schopp discusses types of bond securities and offers an example of a depreciation reserve fund. Investor study of the project's local environment, the state's regulatory history and the financial strength of the borrowing is recommended before actual purchase. Other areas covered are: 1) feasibility studies, 2) financial indicators, 3) reimbursement climate, 4) risks. Schopp also suggests that the investor examine the project management and governing board.

Optimal Long-Term Health Care for the Elderly: An Acute Care Hospital's Perspective
Article Abstract:
Butler discusses the growing elderly population and how this demographic change affects hospitals. He also covers reimbursement problems created by Medicare and Medicaid. Boston is used as an example. Butler makes a case for hospitals as long-term care sponsors. Hospitals are in position to plan integration of community services and thereby, continuum of care for the patient. Again, using Massachusetts, Butler provides examples of what he calls 'imaginative programs'.
