Proving our value: why we documented it
Article Abstract:
Hospitals that perform substantial charity care for the community should not be seen as sources of tax revenue by local governments. Instead, they should receive tax exemptions and be valued for their contribution to the local economy. For example, the 82 hospitals in Pennsylvania's Delaware Valley would owe about $80 million in property taxes, but they provided at least $300 million in care for the poor in 1991. The Delaware Valley Hospital Council is sponsoring a state bill to allow such hospitals to keep their tax-exempt status.
