Article Abstract:

Two start-up companies are offering needed capital to non-profit hospitals, while promising that the hospitals can retain local control of their policies and charitable missions. Vanguard Health Systems offers to acquire hospitals and convert them to for-profit status. MissionHealth, however, creates joint ventures with non-profits. Critics say joint ventures might jeopardize the non-profit tax status of the hospitals working with MissionHealth.

Gain on pain: two new initiatives aim to bring long-overlooked pain control issues front and center

Article Abstract:

The Wisconsin Cancer Pain Initiative and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations are working together to develop pain control standards. The Pain and Policy Studies Group is evaluating regulations that prevent pain management. These University of Wisconsin efforts are funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
