Older women's lives through time
Article Abstract:
A 6-year longitudinal study of 103 community-dwelling older female subjects has been carried out. Over time, physical health, personal growth and purpose in life decreased and depression increased. Positive relations and autonomy were stable. Declines in physical health rarely affected the self according to regression analyses that also showed increase in depression was related only to concurrent physical health. Earlier depression did not predict later physical health. Positive self-conceptions and physical health seem to be independent in this group.

Individuation and varieties of well-being experience among older women
Article Abstract:
A model of ecological well-being that takes in some themes of Jungian individuation exists and has been expanded with the intent to categorize qualitative well-being experiences of older women. Individuation and well-being are expressed in terms of pivotal, arresting and varied experiences that reflect individuality and completeness. Along with final synthesis, dreaming, artistic creation, self-image expansion, and beauty making are examples of individuated well-being.

Specter of the crone: the experience of vertebral fracture
Article Abstract:
Osteoporosis of the spine appears to alter significantly a woman's self-image to that of a stooped, old woman. Women with postmenopausal osteoporosis who participated in a research study were upset by the changes in their posture and their height. Nurses should concentrate on promoting self-care, education, pain management, and stress reduction techniques. The approach should be aimed at improving the quality of life for these women.
