Recombinant human erythropoietin as a treatment for anemia of prematurity
Article Abstract:
Anemia of prematurity (AOP) is the normal physiologic anemia of infancy in an exaggerated form. The main pathophysiologic abnormality in its development is insufficient production of erythropoietin, which regulates red blood cell production. Studies of the safety and efficacy of recombinant human erythropoietin in infants with this disorder have consistently shown an increase in hematocrits and reticulocyte counts, fewer blood transfusions, reduced transfused volume of blood relative to body weight and a decrease in iron available in the body. Dose recommendations are available.

Pharmacologic management of neonatal abstinence syndrome
Article Abstract:
Infants exposed to illicit drugs while in the womb may exhibit signs of withdrawal after birth. The type and amount of drug the mother used may predict what symptoms will develop and when. Researchers highlight the effects and effective treatments for infants exposed to the most commonly abused drugs. Treatments for infants experiencing withdrawal include paregoric, diazepam, phenobarbitol, morphine, and tincture of opium.
