Software for hard choices
Article Abstract:
Decision Innovations, a software developer startup based in Research Triangle Park, NC, has introduced its PlanSmartChoice program that assists would-be health insurance enrollees. The software allows the enrollees to choose their plans by matching their quality and cost preferences with facts about plans available to them. PlanSmartChoice was developed with the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research to help federal workers select from an array of 400 plans. The software uses plan profiles stored in a central database marketed to private firms and business coalitions. The plan details are updated regularly including changes to networks of doctors and hospitals.

A line drawn in the sand
Article Abstract:
A limited liability company whose investors include MedCath and the Arizona Heart Institute is building the 69-bed Arizona Heart Hospital. The $32 million facility is intended to provide a single site for the treatment of cardiovascular ailments, according to hospital president Karen DeWitt. It is also intended to address cardiac surgeon Edward Diethrich's concerns about quality of care. Diethrich is the Arizona Hearth Institute's founder. Detractors claim that the Phoenix area already has too many hospital beds and enough open-heart-surgery programs.
