Strategizing health care for an aging America
Article Abstract:
Hospitals must prepare for the rising numbers of aging Americans, the need to reduce health care costs and the increase in home care and other outpatient services. To respond to these changes, hospitals should define a new model of management based on a automated, integrated information network of hospital and community-based services. The model should include needs assessment, patient education and support, case management and other components. In forming a new model, hospitals should consider their organizational and medical responses to older patients. A checklist of management objectives is included.

Toppling the power of the pyramid: team-based restructuring for TQM, patient-centered care
Article Abstract:
The traditional function-hierarchical management structure no longer serves the needs of hospitals pursuing total quality management, continuous quality improvement and patient-centered care. Team-based management, represented by a bubble diagram instead of a pyramid, consists of project teams, each focusing on an aspect of health care delivery. For example, an admissions team may streamline admission processes while maintaining necessary data collection and processing. The team leader coaches and facilitates, and employees can see the value of their contributions.
