Nursing is an old profession but a young science according to Marguerite Kinney, DNSc, RN, FAAN, formerly professor and associate director of the center for Nursing Research, School of Nursing, Univ of Alabama at Birmingham. It is crucial, she feels, that students learn to synthesize information, consider possible applications and evaluate alternatives. Dr. Kinney was a pioneer in nursing related to open heart surgery and has been named a transformational leader in cardiovascular nursing.

It is essential to gain expert knowledge, wise mentors and constructive critique to develop the skill to make meaningful contributions in a nursing career and to become a leader in cardiovascular nursing according to Professor Martha N. Hill, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She says her success in professional nursing also depended on intellectual curiosity, very high standards, analytic and communication skills and lots of hard work.
