Mac games: dead or alive?
Article Abstract:
The Macintosh supplies a solid graphics and multimedia platform that is ideal for games, but few game vendors have developed software for it. Game developers were discouraged in the early days of the Mac because it was difficult to program, and the first Macs lacked color graphics or enough memory to run games effectively. High prices also limited the Mac's appeal, and Apple spent years insisting that the machine was not a 'toy' as it courted the business market, causing game developers to ignore the Mac. Apple has finally come to realize that games help drive the computer market, especially in the fast-growing consumer arena. Several recent Mac developments, such as QuickTime VR, QuickDraw 3D and OpenDoc, have promising game applications. PCs nevertheless remain the dominant game platform, and the Mac is still neglected in some areas, such as sports games. Retail space for Mac games is also severely limited.

Dark Seed II
Article Abstract:
Cyberdreams' $49 Dark Seed II, a sequel to the 1992 Dark Seed game, has the protagonist recovering from his earlier ordeal and locating a body at the local morgue that turns out to be his high-school sweetheart; he must prove himself innocent when the sheriff accuses him of the crime. Dark Seed II has a much better storyline than its predecessor and retains the beautiful rendered Super VGA graphics and H.R. Giger grotesque art in the Dark Worlds. The full-scene transitional animations are grainy and can be choppy even on a fast system, although the live-action characters and backdrops blend effectively. Protagonist Dawson is also not an appealing hero; he has a tendency to whine and moan. Dark Seed II is, nevertheless, a classic graphic adventure and a good value.
