Judgement day for Windows 95
Article Abstract:
Microsoft has been touting Windows 95 as the platform of choice for computer games, but the first batch of Windows 95 games have been less than impressive. Microsoft claims that Windows 95 makes games faster and easier to use, install and develop. The first group of Windows 95 games are easy to install, but they are generally slower than the original DOS versions. Microsoft has attempted to improve Windows 95's image in the gaming market with the release of its Windows 95 Game Software Developers Kit. Although Microsoft and game developers claim that the kit produces games that outperform the DOS versions, few games still take full advantage of Windows 95's sophisticated features. At Microsoft's Judgement Day trade show, company executives claimed that as many as 75 Windows 95-native games would hit the market by the end of 1995. Most observers estimate that the majority of new games will be Windows 95-native by mid-1996. Short reviews of current Windows 95 games are presented.

Psychic Detective
Article Abstract:
Electronic Arts' $59.95 Psychic Detective is the company's latest 'interactive movie' game, consisting entirely of full-motion video, and introduces several new techniques. The user plays a sideshow fortune-teller named Eric Fox who learns how to project himself into the head of anyone with whom he comes into contact. Among the more interesting plot developments are secret Soviet psychic experiments, 'psychic collectors' who boost Eric's powers, and a climactic, mysterious board game called Black Diamond where Eric must match wits with the evil Max Mirage, who plays on hidden fears and neuroses. The writing is good, but the acting is not, and the video quality is blocky and grainy. Special effects are also tacky. Psychic Detective cannot decide whether it is an interactive movie or a goal-oriented strategy game, and is primarily an intellectual exercise.
