Three landscape artists are profiled. Janis Hall bulldozes land sculptures that idealize light, shadows and wind. Alan Sonfist replants primeval landscapes in the midst of urban development. Mel Chin's 'Revival Field,' on a hazardous waste site, reclaims heavy metals with plants.

Joel Otterson welds commonly found materials intomodernist works of art, including furnitures. His works, which combine functionality with comfort and elegance, attest to his talents. Otterson was among the proponents of the friendly concept school of art.

An island ark: endangered species find shelter on Gerald Durrell's Channel Island preserve

Environmentalist Gerald Durrell bought Les Augres Manor on Jersey Island, UK, in 1959. Since then, he has set up the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust and maintains a zoo on the island, which harbors around 187 endangered species of wildlife.
