May beetles/June beetles: Phyllophaga spp

Article Abstract:

May beetles, which are also called June beetles, are large reddish brown or black insects that feed on the roots and tubers of plants such as turf grass, pasture grasses, strawberries, corn, potatoes and Christmas trees. Natural methods for controlling the beetles are described.

Blister beetles

Article Abstract:

Blister beetles will eat almost everything in the garden. They also emit an irritating substance that annoys humans but can kill horses. One natural control method is to remove the beetles with gloved hands and kill them in a jar containing alcohol.

Give potato beetles the cold shoulder

Article Abstract:

Colorado potato beetles were drawn to overwinter in soil planted with potatoes in a University of Wisconsin experiment. The top 6 to 10 inches of the soil were then mulched and removed. Only 30% of the beetles had survived.
