Our secret garden
Article Abstract:
A teacher and her students conceived and planted a garden in an interior courtyard of PS 143 in Queens, NY. She and another teacher conceived the plan to give children in their underfunded school a challenging and interesting project. With impromptu community help and support from other school staff, it became a reality and was dubbed 'Our Secret Garden.' The project and the lessons it taught proved to be useful in more than one context, helping the author to better understand her students as individuals.

Texas wildflowers
Article Abstract:
A Montessori pre-school on central Texas tries to instill in its pupils a sense of nature by encouraging them to garden. The school's garden is full of native plants and the kids are encouraged to wander freely and touch the many plants. They are taught environmentally sound gardening practices and the names of each plant. The garden attracts birds, animals and insects, allowing the children to get to know some other native species, as well.
