The gifted Mr. Galle
Article Abstract:
Fred Galle, who wrote a definitive book on azaleas, provides a tour of his lifework in the Callaway Gardens of Pine Mountain, Georgia. As director of horticulture and curator from 1953 to 1963, Galle's honors are plentiful. His expertise spans a variety of other species including hollies, gingers, crabapples and clethras. The Callaway Gardens contain miles of trails with native plants as well as azaleas, which are often hand pollinated to produce a rich variety of color.
