Service Merchandise puts furniture in the spotlight

Service Merchandise, a catalog furniture showroom, is promoting new trendy furniture as part of its company-wide strategy of expanding and enhancing its furniture line. Among the new furniture being featured near the store's front doors were stationary upholstery such as a chair and ottoman made by Klote International with Covington covers featured with cocktail tables in rustic Mexican pine. The trendy furnishings are being showcased in the stores together with an array of other popular furniture, said the firm's new senior vice president of hardlines. Other trendy furniture include rustic pine Shenandoah crib and chest from Bassett.

Renters Choice closes Thorn purchase

Renters Choice completed in the first week of August 1998 its $900-million cash acquisition of Wichita, KS-based Thorn Americas from Thorn plc of London, UK. The completion of the acquisition of Thorn Americas brought Renters Choice to the top of the rent-to-own (RTO) market. With the acquisition, Renters Choice became the first chain with furniture and home accents rentals in excess of $400 million, the first 2,000-outlet RTO chain in the world and the first RTO operator with over $1 billion in yearly revenue.

Wal-Mart axes its furniture store test

Wal-Mart Stores Inc announced that it will close 48 of its 61 Bud's Discount City stores, ending its three-year experiment with full-line furniture stores. A Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the furniture prototypes will shut down by Oct 1, 1997, while the furniture operations will start conducting clearance sales by Aug 1. The spokeswoman, however, said that furniture sales in the Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart Supercenter and Sam's Club stores will still continue.
