China warms to insurers
Article Abstract:
China is opening its insurance market to foreign companies as its citizens' need for insurance is growing due to their accumulation of private property, acquisition of automobiles and secure private income. The market is also characterized by an emerging middle class and the availability of modern products and distribution systems. However, a lengthy and cumbersome licensing process and an arbitrary method of regulation await US companies wanting to break into the Chinese market. However, Chinese regulators are making moves to familiarize themselves with the Western way of doing insurance business and are working to make deals mutually beneficial.

The captive market has rocketed in growth by almost 300% since the 1980s.

Even small agencies should ride info highway
Article Abstract:
Only 15.6% of independent insurance agencies make use of the Internet, according to the Academy of Producer Insurance Studies' 1996-97 Agency Performance Results Study. By failing to take advantage of the fast, efficient communication provided by the Internet, agents risk missing out on automation advances. Agencies that do not adopt new technologies, such as the Internet, may not survive.
